The Dream: Affordable Clean Steel Steel is responsible for 8 - 10% of global emissions with roughly 2.6 Gt of direct CO₂ emissions annually. The demand for steel is expected to rise as much as 30% by 2050, but incumbent pathways each face barriers that make decarbonization extremely difficult. Emergent “green” production technologies produce steel at large cost premiums and face scale-up challenges.
